Antibiofoulant Optical Quality PMMA
Technology Description
Nanohmics has developed a process to create Optical Quality Anti-biofoulant Polymers, by incorporating algaecide into optical quality polymers to be used for instrument coverglass or viewing glass.
The technology was created for an SBIR grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with the goal to produce optical quality coverglass specifically for the harsh marine environment. These coverglasses are used for instrumentation and sensors that NOAA relies upon for observation of our marine environment and atmospheric conditions. The problem that is addressed by the technology is the rapid growth of marine life on any object that is subjected to the marine environment.
Intellectual Property
Patent Number 7,786,186
Commercial Application
The commercial potential for anti-biofoulant optical acrylics are extensive. From producing quality aquarium glass to construction materials, this technology is ideal for extending the durability of products susceptible to algae growth. Tests show that this technology can inhibit growth around 3x untreated acrylics.
- Aquarium Glass
- Lenses
- Sensors
- Boat glass, portals and windows
- Shingles
- Commercial building acrylics
